EFT and the Toughest Addiction… Part 1

By Dennis Sulava

First of all, I am not some skinny Minnie who is preaching from a soap box. I am in the trenches with the rest of you and have been for 53 years. That's right. I have been fighting weight problems for 53 years. I was about 3 years old when my mom commented about my weight as she dressed me to go to church. Now, she wasn't being mean when she said, "Oh Denny, I think you're going to have to go on a diet." Being the literal child that I was, I said that I would go but, "I want to come back." Well, that response from me made her realize that I had no idea what a diet was. She felt bad that I was thinking she wanted to send me away to some far away place called a "diet." My mom's comment didn't help matters, but I had already at that early age developed some pretty strong impulses for food, which I was using to cover up things I did not want to face. That's what cravings really are; self-imposed defense mechanisms that help us avoid the real problem by substituting food for facing the problems. In an effort to avoid the emotional pain of a situation, we eat. In that effort for self-preservation, the subconscious mind throws us a life preserver, but it may as well be made out of cement. Weight then becomes even a greater problem than the original issue.

I believe addiction to food is our greatest and toughest addiction to conquer. First of all, you don't have to use heroin, crack cocaine, or any of the myriad of illegal or legal drugs on the market today, but you have to eat. Now this is not an earth shattering revelation new to you. However, did you know that even by the late nineties this country had already exceeded spending in excess of 50 billion dollars annually on weight loss products? Up until recently man's life span has been getting longer. Food, which has been the sustainer of life, has become a double-edged sword. It is now also becoming our greatest addiction. Instead of merely sustaining life, food is now the thing that will reverse the long standing trend ensuring that man's life expectancy continues to lengthen. Today's children are facing, for the first time in many years, the possibility of living a shorter life than their parents, and the reason is obesity. Nothing, besides obesity, including AIDS had been a threat to shorten our life spans. That is why I call it our toughest addiction to conquer. Certainly, fast food has contributed to the obesity rise. Fast foods are like drugs and very addictive, and, a subject, indeed, unto itself. Nevertheless, let's step away from that topic and discuss the dynamics of weight loss when approached on an energetic level.

If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always gotten. So many people are doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. If diets were the answer, then surely one of those gazillion diets out there would have gotten it right by now. I believe that the answer is in an approach that deals with energetic beings on an energetic level. EFT goes beyond diets and addresses core issues dealing with weight problems. EFT works by tapping on acupuncture points with your fingers while you keep the problem in your awareness.

EFT has advantages over other techniques when being used for weight loss. It can effectively be used to deal with a truly self-sabotaging culprit call Psychological Reversal. When someone is psychologically reversed about weight loss, all the diets in the world won't work, at least not for long. Why? Well, your subconscious mind believes that losing weight is not good for you or will put you in danger. That is why it is so hard to stick to a diet. Don't you think that if you "really really really" wanted to lose weight, that you would have done so by now? If you have been dealing with trying to lose weight for a long time, there is a very good chance that you are psychologically reversed in that area. If you have been on a diet and lost some weight, and you celebrated by eating, you just have to wonder if that makes sense. That is the kind of "non-sense" that psychological reversal brings to you. After losing some weight, did a comment that you are looking good send you off to the cupboards? That is psychological reversal and must be dealt with before permanent weight loss can be achieved. EFT is suited to help with psychological reversals.

Even with the power of EFT, weight loss is a challenge, but there is great hope to find the emotions behind your cravings and eating compulsions, and deal with them once and for all. The next article will deal specifically with phrases that you can use to tap on while trying to alleviate cravings and psychological reversal.
